Meditations on an awards show

I haven’t seen the Academy Awards.  Anything broadcast live from California will be on too late for me here in the UK.  But I did see that Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director.  This is a moment of note, not just because she is the first woman to win this award, but because she also directed that heady cop/surfer/bank robber movie Point Break starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves.  I’m not sure how this movie got so roundly ignored by the academy when it first came out but I like to think of this as its belated acknowledgement.

As for the fact that a woman has FINALLY won this award.  I’ll be more impressed when a second woman wins, and even more when the third and fourth and tenth and twelfth take it.  Especially if it takes less than 30 years to happen.
